Gripples - Rope locks…

October 5, 2008 – 12:38 am
Doug writes in -I use a lot of aircraft cable for installing/building artworks, often with pressed ferrules and turnbuckles to make adjustable lengths. Kind of a pain, but it works. At the ArtBots show this weekend I was introduced to Gripples -- they're kind of like zip ties, but for aircraft cable. Some of them are even reversible! They seem to be well known in Europe and Asia, but I've never seen them in the US. I think they might be common in theater rigging. They're a bit expensive, but so convenient! As soon as I get home I'm going to order a bunch to see if they're really as useful as they appear to be... Read more | Permalink | Comments | Read more articles in Toolbox | Digg this!

Making Austin Weird: Hair and Balanced

October 5, 2008 – 12:36 am
From now until the awesomeness that is Maker Faire Austin, I'll be highlighting projects that you can find at Travis County Fairgrounds on 10/18-19. Tickets here; see you there! I'm excited to let you all know about a very hairy device debut occurring at Maker Faire Austin: the Hair and Balanced TV Filter Kit. In the Maker's own words: The Hair and Balanced TV Filter taps into the composite video input to your TV, detects whether you are watching talking head pundits or newscasters, then draws moustaches on the faces on the screen. The TV filter is a new kind of hardware shield that helps users take control of their screen. Read more here, and make sure you're at the expo center for the mustachioed fun! Pedal powered tank

October 5, 2008 – 12:35 am
Nice pedal powered tank on Pop Sci! If you want to crash a local parade of human-powered vehicles and soak unsuspecting onlookers in water or vaporized hot dogs, a pink camouflage tank is a pretty good craft to do it in. At least that's what 30-year-old Philadelphia gearhead Vin Marshall thought when he persuaded nine of his friends to build the 2,000-pound replica, complete with a functioning pneumatic cannon. The trick was moving the tank using muscle alone. Computer models showed that it could fit hardware for six pedalers and yield about 1.5 horsepower. That's not enough to move tank treads, so the team used wheels instead. Then they gave it bicycle-like gearing to get more power from less exertion. A salvaged rear differential (which allows wheels to spin independently) from an old truck axle made turning more efficient. Read more | Permalink | Comments | Read more articles in Bicycles ...
